Joey Logano [00:00:02]:
You gotta live your life and do you the best. And, you know, I think it’s important to, you know, look good and race good and do everything at the best of your ability, whether that’s being a family man, whether that’s being in your office, whether that’s right for me in my office in the race car, or looking your best. Why wouldn’t you do that if you had the ability to do it.
Kevin Rolston [00:00:45]:
Welcome to HairPod, the podcast where you get to hear real people talk about their hair journeys. I’m your host, Kevin Rolston, and each week I get to interview people from different walks of life whose lives have been touched by hair loss in some form or fashion. Many of our guests have experienced hair loss themselves, found a way to get their confidence and their hair back. On today’s episode, we’re going to change gears just a little bit. Recently, I got to catch up with top NASCAR champion Joey Logano, who’s been on previous episodes since the last time we spoke. Joey’s been living life in the fast lane. Literally, when I caught up with him for this interview, he was in Las Vegas getting ready for yet another race. Funny enough, every time I connect with Joey, he seems to be right on the brink of another win.
Kevin Rolston [00:01:35]:
At this point, I am starting to think that the HairPod is a really good luck charm for Joey.
Kevin Rolston [00:01:45]:
Well, here we are today with defending NASCAR Cup Series champion Joey Logano. Hello and welcome to the HairPod.
Joey Logano [00:01:52]:
Joey, what’s happening? You know, I doing great.
Kevin Rolston [00:01:57]:
Not as good as you, but we’re doing okay. I believe every time we talk to you, you just rack up more and more wins. In fact, I think you’ve added another series cup championship since the last time we spoke.
Joey Logano [00:02:09]:
Well, good. We gotta keep doing that.
Kevin Rolston [00:02:11]:
Yes. I think this has got to be. The secret to your success is the HairPod. There’s no other explanation, I don’t think.
Joey Logano [00:02:18]:
Obviously.
Kevin Rolston [00:02:19]:
Right. Tell me a little bit about that feeling, because, you know, going from two to three, three, you have now put yourself in a whole other stratosphere when it comes to the legend of nascar. How does that feel for you? And what do you think about some of the other drivers that are at the same level where you are now?
Joey Logano [00:02:38]:
Yeah, I mean, the. I mean, winning a championship is. It’s so hard to put into words what that feeling is like. Right. Because you work so hard to achieve this moment, and it’s the first. The first 15 minutes after you win the championship is really what it’s all about. You know, as you cross the Start, finish, line. Those emotions just hit you.
Joey Logano [00:02:59]:
And I don’t think there’s another way outside of professional sports that you can experience this feeling. Because success, and whether it’s in business or other things in life, a lot of times it’s a slow build, right? Like, you slowly, you’re scratching, clawing, and the win is there, but it doesn’t just hit you, right? Like, you know the win is there and those type of things. But in sports, you don’t know you got it until the last minute, right? Until, like, you take the last shot and you have a buzzer beater or you come across the line side by side for a win and it just hits you quick. And when you add the championship behind it and everyone’s celebrating together and everyone just yelling and screaming is really what happens, because nobody knows what to say. It’s so much fun. And that is the moment that you work for. That’s why we work so hard, is for that.
Kevin Rolston [00:03:49]:
Who is the first person you thank after you win a championship? Is it family? Is it God? Is it your crew?
Joey Logano [00:03:55]:
Yeah. Yeah. Well, I thank God every morning a championship for that. Yeah. Just to live the life that I live and get to chase my dream. That’s. That’s enough. But, you know, when you win a championship like that, you start thinking about all the people have helped you do it.
Joey Logano [00:04:11]:
And, you know, immediately you think of your family, right, because they’re in the grind with you every day. As you know, I’m sitting here in Las Vegas right now getting ready for a race. You know, they’re. They’re home grinding it out. You know, my wife’s trying to raise three kids on her own right now as I’m out here. So imagine there’s, there’s. It’s just quite a toll on everybody. And then obviously your team that’s there and preparing the cars and obviously with the pit stops and the strategy, how important that is these days, everybody celebrating together is really what it’s about.
Kevin Rolston [00:04:53]:
So tell me a bit about the race coming up on Sunday. Pennzoil 400. You’re driving the number 22 Pennzoil Ford Mustang. You celebrated Victory Lane four times at this track. Why do you love it? And what is it about the strategy of driving this track that plays so well into your skill set?
Joey Logano [00:05:10]:
Yeah, it’s been a great track for us. And it’s just a track, honestly. It takes a little bit of everything. You know, you got to be able to have a fast car, right? You gotta. And it’s fast, Right. So the track, you’re on the gas a lot, so you gotta have good horsepower, you gotta have good aerodynamics. Right. You gotta have a good efficient car.
Joey Logano [00:05:28]:
And it’s not real draggy on the straightaway, but has a lot of downforce because you. You’re going fast through the corners. You need that handling. It’s bumpy. So mechanically, your suspension and all has to be really good. And then you gotta hit the strategy. Right. Like, we’ve won this race multiple ways.
Joey Logano [00:05:44]:
A couple times just being fast. But then, you know, a couple other times we just had the right strategy where we had maybe a 10th place car and we did things correctly. And, you know, last. Last time we were here, we wanted on strategy and. And we had great fuel mileage and it worked out for us. So just a wild race where anything can happen. Like. Like any other race.
Joey Logano [00:06:06]:
But it just seems like here in Vegas.
Kevin Rolston [00:06:08]:
Yeah.
Joey Logano [00:06:09]:
Things happen that are kind of crazy at the end.
Kevin Rolston [00:06:11]:
Just something about it, I guess. You probably. Every driver probably has their own favorite track and for different reasons. Would you say this is your favorite?
Joey Logano [00:06:19]:
I’d say it’s one of them. Okay. Your favorite track, naturally, is the one you’re best at. Right.
Kevin Rolston [00:06:26]:
I can imagine that.
Joey Logano [00:06:27]:
I don’t care what city it’s in. I don’t care anything else. If we give a better winning, that’s the best. The racetrack I want to go to.
Kevin Rolston [00:06:34]:
Yeah.
Joey Logano [00:06:35]:
You get to choose. Right. You go to the ones that they tell you to go to.
Kevin Rolston [00:06:41]:
Like many professions today, NASCAR is constantly evolving. Drivers like Joey aren’t just adapting behind the wheel. They’re also navigating changes in how competitions and tournaments are structured.
Kevin Rolston [00:06:54]:
Well, we’re now four races into the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season. Tell me what you think about the current format, and do you think it is rewarding the best drivers?
Joey Logano [00:07:06]:
I personally think so. It’s something that, you know, the playoff format has been a hot topic really, since introduction, and it’s different than other sports because some sports have just always had a playoff system of some sort, and it made minor tweaks. When NASCAR, it used to be just 36 races, and whoever scored the most points in between 30, 36 races was a champion.
Kevin Rolston [00:07:32]:
Yeah.
Joey Logano [00:07:33]:
Naturally, if you run 36 weekends, somebody can get so far out ahead Right. That they win championship, three races to go, they don’t even have to show up. So there’s no, like, intense, you know, moment. Right. Back to what we were talking about. That moment when you win the championship, and it’s that close. This is like yeah, we won. And what do we do the next three races? No one’s even watching.
Joey Logano [00:07:54]:
Nobody cares. It’s over. I think it’s great.
Kevin Rolston [00:07:57]:
Well, I think the fans, I mean, in every sport, you know, they really do like that playoff feel, and it does add more excitement to it. And, you know, to your point, like you were saying, NASCAR was losing that towards the end of the year, and it is now a more exciting sport because of it.
Joey Logano [00:08:13]:
Absolutely. Absolutely. Yeah. I mean, playoffs in any sport. Right. It puts people’s back up against the wall.
Kevin Rolston [00:08:20]:
Yeah.
Joey Logano [00:08:21]:
And it’s like, what are you willing to do to win? And I think as a. As a competitor and as a fan, that is really cool.
Kevin Rolston [00:08:29]:
Now, tell me a bit, because every sport deals with this as well. NASCAR’s had some criticism this year about officiating inconsistencies. Do you think they are a problem right now in the sport?
Joey Logano [00:08:46]:
It’s a hard. I mean, it’s a hard gig, let’s be honest. I mean, it’s tough to, you know, call, you know, scenarios when they’re. When they’re at a different field every week. Right. Like, whereas, you know, it’s football, NBA. Yeah. They might be in a different court or a different field, but their.
Joey Logano [00:09:02]:
Their lines are all pretty much the same.
Kevin Rolston [00:09:04]:
Right.
Joey Logano [00:09:04]:
We’re going from half mile racetrack.
Kevin Rolston [00:09:06]:
Yeah.
Joey Logano [00:09:06]:
Mile and a half racetrack to road course. But we have a lot.
Kevin Rolston [00:09:10]:
Yeah.
Joey Logano [00:09:10]:
And the rules that we have to enforce are a lot more. Because there’s thousands of parts on a race car. Right. And they. It’s up. Like, we rely on NASCAR to officiate that. So no one is getting a competitive advantage with their race car. Is.
Joey Logano [00:09:26]:
Is that more challenging than other sports? Yes, I think so. Is that going to come with more criticism and you’re going to miss some calls? Unfortunately, we’ve seen that. Hopefully that’s not the case. And they’re able to. To be consistent on each call. Right. But I can tell you one thing. Competitors are the first ones to call them out.
Kevin Rolston [00:09:46]:
Oh, I know.
Joey Logano [00:09:48]:
A little bit different. Hey, hey, that’s not what happened last time. We’re there to hold them honest as much as they’re there to hold us honest.
Kevin Rolston [00:10:07]:
It’s only one with F1 making a bigger play for America. How do you feel about having more international NASCAR races like in Mexico and Brazil? And does that make it harder on you and your family and your consideration for your future in the sport?
Joey Logano [00:10:22]:
I mean, I think it’s great for our sport to grow outside of what we are. And just like anything Else in life, you got to grow cautiously because you don’t want to lose track of your roots and what NASCAR is, right? When we are as Americana as it gets, like you think America, NASCAR is one of the first things that comes to your mind, right? And great, right? We have a prayer before the race. We have an amazing national anthem, big flyover every weekend. Like, it is. It is something to see. And so you don’t want to lose that feel, but at the same time, growth is important, and you don’t want to just get stuck in your ways either. So, you know, I think just kind of slowly, methodically, you know, branching out a little bit here and there is neat because you see these global sports, you brought up F1, but whether it’s F1 or soccer, right, they’re massive because it’s global and you have a whole country rooting for one team. Like, that’d be neat.
Joey Logano [00:11:29]:
All right. We. We don’t that currently what we’re doing, and maybe that’s not who we are, but it is kind of neat to see if we can dabble in that a little. We change it up. We change it up. This year, it’s double down. And the reason behind, the few reasons behind it, but the main reason being because we just won the championship. And one of the biggest things that you have to fight after that is complacency, and also knowing it’s kind of putting that chip back on the shoulder a little bit, because what we did last year won’t be good enough to win this year.
Joey Logano [00:12:16]:
And so everything we did, we kind of got to double down on, right? We got to work a little bit harder. We got to keep doing things twice as hard. And, you know, I think that was a cool one to. To. To get behind also. Another neat part of that is last year, I got to go to an air force base and fly with the 77 77th Squadron, and they’re called the Gamblers, and their thing is double down. So we took their logo, they let us use it and kind of change it a little bit to what our NASCAR version of it would be and became friends with a few of them on. On their team.
Joey Logano [00:12:52]:
And so it kind of ties a little bit of the military with our race team and kind of have teams together, fighting together. So cool.
Kevin Rolston [00:13:08]:
Now I see you popping up on TV more and more. I always see you in the HairClub commercial that is running all over the place. When you’re in nascar, you have helmets and ball caps, but clearly you’re getting caught at times where you can’t wear a ball cap. TV maybe you’re going to a gala or something like that. Tell me the importance now because you do see some before Joey’s new hair and after Joey’s new hair. So can you tell me how important is that to you and where you are in life and where you think you’re going as an influencer and a personality?
Joey Logano [00:13:37]:
Yeah, well, it helps me actually kind of know, like time, date things. I’m like, oh, okay, that was years ago. But, you know, I’ve enjoyed it. You know, it’s something that, you know, people are. People don’t talk about it that much in their life. They don’t want to. Right. And what’s insecurities or whatever it may be, but I kind of felt like, hey, why not talk about it? You know, why not help people if I can, if I get this great platform and we can talk about it and there’s, there’s a way to fix a problem.
Joey Logano [00:14:12]:
Why wouldn’t you fix it? Right? Like that to me is that simple, right? Don’t be afraid to do that or be afraid of what people may say. Right. If it’s something that you want to fix, then go fix it. Right. It’s just like anything with your body, right? I mean, if you want to get in better shape, go to the gym.
Kevin Rolston [00:14:30]:
Yeah, right.
Joey Logano [00:14:31]:
If you want to, you know, have more hair, there is a way to do that too. So I just think, you know, back to the complacency thing, right? And what our society sometimes can be. You gotta live your life and do you the best. And, you know, I think it’s important to, you know, look good and race good and do everything at the best of your ability. Whether that’s being a family man, whether that’s being in your office, whether that’s right for me in my office in the race car, or looking your best. Why wouldn’t you do that if you had the ability to do it?
Kevin Rolston [00:15:10]:
So do you think your post racing future is going to be in television then, Joey?
Joey Logano [00:15:15]:
Yeah, I think so.
Kevin Rolston [00:15:16]:
Okay.
Joey Logano [00:15:17]:
I got done with the race last night. I did a truck race and so. And I got another one next weekend in Miami. So I’m up in the booth quite a bit and I enjoy it. Right. I mean, that’s something that, you know, to your point, you’re not wearing a hat up there, you’re wearing a suit and tie.
Kevin Rolston [00:15:32]:
Yeah, right.
Joey Logano [00:15:33]:
You know, and you got to be able to, you think about sometimes the scenarios happening pretty quick because you’re getting out of the race car. And the race usually starts within an hour after our qualifying session. So you get out of the race car and you, you run up there real quick, put a suit and tie on, you know, do your hair up and, and boom, you’re on tv and it happens really, really fast. So you want to have some, you know, something reliable to where you can, you know, be able to transition from a race car driver to an analyst as quickly as possible.
Kevin Rolston [00:16:05]:
Life isn’t just about work and speed. When he’s not racing, Joey prioritizes time with his wife and kids.
Kevin Rolston [00:16:13]:
Let me a little bit more about your life outside of the track and let’s imagine we’re in the off season right now. What does it look like for you day to day and what are you doing when the cameras aren’t around you?
Joey Logano [00:16:26]:
That’s time that I try to reserve for my family as much as possible. Right. We talked about as much as I’m gone from home all the time. I try to be, you know, there as much as possible. I got three little kids and they’re becoming more fun every day. I think I’m in the sweets now when it comes to the age perspective and so I don’t want to miss out on a lot of that stuff. And there’s so much fun. So dad’s outside with them a lot.
Kevin Rolston [00:16:53]:
That’s great. Yeah. Okay.
Joey Logano [00:16:55]:
Nothing changes. I enjoy. My oldest likes to ride four wheelers and of course dad enjoys that a lot. Building trails out in the woods and you know, so we get out there and just, just do it, you know. And then my other two are a little bit younger, but we have a lot of fun doing things outside too. And you know, like I said, in the summertime’s coming up so a lot of swimming and, and playing outside. So I look forward to that. It’s always fun.
Joey Logano [00:17:20]:
I guess a couple other businesses that I’m a part of and you know, do that, but it’s all about the balance, as you know, and it’s sometimes hard to do.
Kevin Rolston [00:17:33]:
Of course, even family time has a need for speed. The entire Logano family likes to move fast, whether it’s on the track or on vacation.
Kevin Rolston [00:17:43]:
So tell me, give me a little snapshot. What does a Joey Logano family vacation look like?
Joey Logano [00:17:51]:
Non stop stop. My, my, my wife and I are both very energetic people and naturally our kids became the same way, believe it or not.
Kevin Rolston [00:18:01]:
Yeah, that’s great. Uh huh. They learn.
Joey Logano [00:18:04]:
Yes. If we’re on vacation, there’s not much time spent in a hotel room. It Is we’re out, we’re going, going. Yeah, we usually we’ll get back to go when it’s bedtime, which is 8:30ish. And usually by 6:30 we’re up and 7:00 we’re out the door and we will be back until the end. What we do it. That’s how we do it.
Kevin Rolston [00:18:27]:
So wherever we’re at, go go figure. The Logano family goes fast. Who would ever thought, oh, we’re a.
Joey Logano [00:18:32]:
Bunch of crazy people. No one wants to weather. That’s the problem though.
Kevin Rolston [00:18:51]:
A few months ago, HairClub held a VIP experience giveaway for a few lucky clients. And Joey helped join in to make that event extra special.
Kevin Rolston [00:19:00]:
Well, you’ve done something really awesome with HairClub. Can you tell me a little bit about the HairClub VIP fan experience that happened at Daytona? What was offered to our winners of that experience?
Joey Logano [00:19:12]:
Yeah, a lot of guys, a lot of people have fun. You know, they give a VIP race experience where, you know, race fans, that one, they’re able to go to the racetrack, see the behind the scenes tour, right, where you go into the garage in the morning, you see them, you know, getting the cars prepared. Not just our car, but all the whole field. I get to meet him and talk to them some, but kind of see how NASCAR works. Works, right. I mean I’ll see, you know, Sunday in the race on TV and those type of things, but seeing the inner workings of it interesting in any sport, but being able to see that from the NASCAR perspective is neat. So given that experience to the winners was really neat to see. You know, you see them right before you jump in the race car on the grid, right? And then they have the opportunity to watch it on many, you know, multiple different locations that, you know, the typical fan doesn’t get to experience.
Joey Logano [00:20:05]:
Right. Whether that’s on the pit box or suites or just different random places around the racetrack. It’s cool to see all that.
Kevin Rolston [00:20:11]:
Yeah, that’s cool. Well, I tell you, you do great stuff for HairClub. I love seeing your commercials. Love having you part of the HairClub family. Of course, we’re all pulling for you and hoping for another championship this year, Joey.
Joey Logano [00:20:22]:
Absolutely. Thanks for having me on. We’ll talk to you soon.
Kevin Rolston [00:20:25]:
Okay, buddy. Take it.
Kevin Rolston [00:20:33]:
